Lighting Challenges

The Secret is in the Light

It has been an incredible week for Real Estate Photography in Anchorage!  I have had the privilege of photographing some incredible homes this week.  Every home we work with presents it's unique challenges and that is what keeps me coming back week after week.  I love trying to solve the puzzle of lighting.

Lighting to me is key!  I made the decision to use lights early on in my career instead of just using the ambient light that is in the room at the time of the appointment, and I am grateful I did.  Learning to use lights has been a long hard road and I continue each day to master that skill (I don't know that I will ever be able to say that I have actually mastered it).

Here are a couple of examples from this past week of homes that presented some unique lighting challenges;

This photograph used every light in my bag!  8 total to be exact.

Large spaces present a tough lighting challenge.  I ended up using 5 lights to get this shot.

A combination of Sunlight and several off camera flashes really bring this space to life.

Dark cabinets, paint and countertops require a lot of light.  We used about 4 lights for this one shot.

Refrigerator Lights??

The homeowner for this kitchen really liked the lights in the refrigerator and wanted to show them off in the photo so we turned them on for the photo below.  To our eye, we could see in the refrigerator and it looked good, but to the camera it was pretty dark compared to the rest of the kitchen.  So how can I show off the refrigerator lights??

Use a wireless flash in the Refrigerator!

The perfect solution here for me was to actually put a flash in the refrigerator and fire it with the rest of the lights in the room.  The flash came out a little chilled but the image really comes together with the refrigerator lights on now!

More Examples from the week...

These are just a few examples of from this past week showing a myriad of lighting scenarios and amazing homes!  We absolutely love what we do and feel so blessed to be able to photograph so many wonderful homes throughout Alaska!
